On February 25-26, 2025, the REVITALISER Twinning project officially kicked off at the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence in Limassol, Cyprus. This initiative brings together top experts and researchers to advance archaeological heritage preservation, remote sensing, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital humanities within the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence Cultural Heritage Cluster.

The two-day event welcomed leading specialists from renowned European institutions, including:

  • Prof. Donna Yates (Maastricht University, Netherlands) – An expert on illicit trafficking of cultural property.
  • Dr. Hector A. Orengo and Ms. Maria Ferrer Bonet (Barcelona Supercomputing Center, Spain) – Specialists in remote sensing and archaeological research.
  • Dr. Fabio Remondino and Dr. Elisa Farella (Fondazione Bruno Kessler - FBK 3DOM, Italy) – Experts in geomatics and artificial intelligence.

This gathering laid the groundwork for innovative approaches to safeguarding cultural heritage and protecting archaeological sites from illegal excavations. By leveraging Big Data, AI, and remote sensing, the REVITALISER project aims to enhance strategies for cultural heritage protection and monitoring.

A highlight of the event was a visit to the archaeological site of Amathous, where officers from the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus guided participants through centuries of history. This visit underscored the project's commitment to preserving cultural heritage and ensuring the protection of significant historical sites.

With exciting developments ahead, the REVITALISER project is poised to redefine the future of cultural heritage preservation.

The project is funded by the European Commission through the Twinning Bottom-Up scheme, with an overall budget of €1,500,000.
