REVITALISER at CAA2026 — AI Applications in Cultural Heritage and Archaeological Protection

The REVITALISER project hosted its dedicated thematic session at the CAA International Conference, the annual gathering of the Computer Applications and Quantitative Methods in Archaeology community, held in Vienna from 31 March to 4 April 2026.

Chaired by Dr. Dante Abate (ECoE) and Iban Berganzo Besga (BSC), session S9 — “AI Applications in Cultural Heritage and Archaeological Protection” — brought together contributions from academia and industry on the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning for the analysis of archaeological landscapes and the detection of human-made features and threats.

REVITALISER consortium partners presented their preliminary methodological work, while invited speakers shared complementary case studies from Europe, the Mediterranean and beyond. The session generated very active discussion on dataset availability, model evaluation and the operational deployment of AI tools in heritage practice.

Scientific articles based on the session contributions are currently under preparation and will be published in open-access format during the second reporting period of the project. CAA2026 confirmed REVITALISER’s growing visibility in the digital archaeology community and opened concrete opportunities for new collaborations on AI-driven cultural property protection.
