Archaeological Aerial Interpretation — Workshop with Prof. Hector A. Orengo at ECoE

On 19–20 May 2025, the ERATOSTHENES Centre of Excellence hosted the first Community of Practice workshop of the REVITALISER Twinning project (CPP-WS1), a two-day intensive training on the interpretation of aerial and satellite imagery for archaeology.

The workshop was led by Prof. Hector A. Orengo, ICREA Research Professor at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), an internationally recognised specialist in computational archaeology, GIS, remote sensing, and the application of machine learning to archaeological research using cloud computing and big-data sources.

Day one was dedicated to the theoretical foundations of aerial and space-borne imagery for archaeological research and for the protection of cultural heritage sites against illegal looting. Day two focused on hands-on training, where participants explored image enhancement, pixel-based analysis and multisource data fusion using Google Earth Engine (GEE).

Through a series of practical exercises, the ECoE Cultural Heritage Cluster strengthened its capacity to apply Earth observation technologies to monitor cultural heritage sites, a foundational step toward the proof-of-concept activities planned in the second half of REVITALISER.
